What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a restoration that is used to build up and protect teeth that have advanced decay or damage too severe to be repaired with more conservative solutions, like a filling. Dental crowns fit over the top of the damaged teeth, replacing lost tooth structure. Dental crowns can be used in a variety of situations, including:

  • To repair severe tooth decay
  • To protect a root-canal treated tooth
  • To improve the appearance of teeth
  • To support dental bridges
  • To be placed on the end of a dental implant

The Dental Crown Process

Dental crowns are placed over two separate appointments. During the first one, we will numb the area surrounding your damaged tooth. Then, we remove the damaged and decayed tooth structure. We also need to remove a small amount of enamel around the tooth to allow the crown to fit perfectly between your teeth. Once the teeth are prepared, impressions are taken and sent off to the dental lab where your crown will be crafted. We will then place a temporary crown on your prepared tooth to keep it safe until your permanent one is ready. In just a couple of weeks, you can return to our practice to get your new restoration.
